Lurking for hours on an HUGE e-mail thread on an high-profile mailing list, the only thing that keeps coming to my mind is: "copyright laws affect us everyday and in so many ways, and populations in general are so clueless about what those laws really say…" There's an educational problem here, one that should be fixed urgently.

I understand you but IMHO there are far urgent things to educate about. Personal finance (that I think would probably have greatly mitigated the impact of this economical crisis) for example.
